What breast imaging services are offered?
Florida Cancer Specialists & Research Institute offers a full range of breast imaging and diagnostic services, including 3D mammography, digital mammography, breast ultrasound, breast MRI, and image-guided breast biopsy at select locations. These services are designed to support early detection and accurate diagnosis.
What is 3D mammography?
3D mammography (tomosynthesis) captures multiple images of the breast from different angles, creating a more detailed, layered view of breast tissue. This improves the ability to detect abnormalities earlier and reduces the likelihood of false positives.
When should I start getting mammograms?
Women age 40 and older should have a screening mammogram every year and continue as long as they are in good health. Your provider may recommend earlier or additional screening based on your individual risk factors.
What is the difference between screening and diagnostic mammograms?
A screening mammogram is a routine exam used to detect early signs of breast cancer in women without symptoms. A diagnostic mammogram is used when there is a concern, such as a lump, pain, or abnormal screening results, and provides a more detailed evaluation.
What is a breast ultrasound used for?
Breast ultrasound uses sound waves to evaluate specific areas of concern identified during a mammogram or physical exam. It is often used to determine whether a mass is a fluid-filled cyst or a solid lesion and provides additional diagnostic detail.
Ultrasound is used alongside, not in place of, mammography.
When is a breast MRI recommended?
Breast MRI may be recommended for patients at higher risk for breast cancer or when additional evaluation is needed. It provides highly detailed images and is often used in combination with mammography for a more complete assessment.
What is a breast biopsy?
Breast biopsy is the only definitive way to determine whether an abnormality is cancerous. During the procedure, a small tissue sample is removed and analyzed in a laboratory.
Florida Cancer Specialists & Research Institute offers several types of biopsy procedures, including stereotactic, ultrasound-guided, MRI-guided, and surgical biopsies at select locations.
What is patient-driven compression?
Patient-driven compression enables individuals undergoing a mammogram to control the pressure applied during the exam. This feature is designed to improve comfort and reduce anxiety while maintaining image quality.
How does Florida Cancer Specialists & Research Institute support patient comfort?
Our breast health centers are designed to create a calm and supportive environment. From advanced technology to specialized staff focused solely on breast imaging, every aspect of care is centered on comfort, privacy, and patient experience.
