Spotlight on Scott Lunin, MD, FCS Director of Physician Engagement

For Dr. Scott Lunin, retirement was not an ending—it was a transition. The conclusion of his clinical career as a medical oncologist and hematologist with Florida Cancer Specialists & Research Institute (FCS) set the stage for a new opportunity to contribute his experience, perspective and passion to impact patient care in a unique way.

Shortly after he retired from daily practice in October 2025, the FCS executive leadership team approached Dr. Lunin to help define and build a new role dedicated to physician recruitment and engagement. In doing so, he discovered a natural next step—one that aligned with the purpose and values that had guided him for decades.

A New Role, The Same North Star

“FCS has long been shaped by physicians whose dedication has driven its growth and evolution into the nation’s largest independent physician-owned, physician-led community oncology practice,” notes Dr. Lunin.

Building on that foundation, Dr. Lunin is helping shape the future of the organization and the physicians who will lead it—with a focus on fostering a culture where excellence, compassion and collaboration drive exceptional patient care.

“Our mission and our commitment to taking great care of patients while also taking great care of one another remain the north star that guides every decision,” he said. By attracting, supporting and empowering outstanding physicians, he hopes to strengthen that legacy and create a lasting impact on patients for years to come.

A Full-Court Approach to Physician Engagement

Dr. Lunin has long admired legendary college basketball coach Mike Krzyzewski. Over four decades, Coach K built a legacy defined not only by championships, but by how he led and his ability to evolve and adapt.

“He always did what he said he would do,” notes Dr. Lunin. “That integrity and consistency built lasting trust with athletes, families and teams united by a shared purpose.”

Drawing on that philosophy, Dr. Lunin works to connect physician candidates to meaningful opportunities with FCS —with the goal of supporting their growth while expanding access to high-quality cancer care for patients and communities.

“We’re shaping the next iteration of FCS—one that meets the evolving needs of patients while staying grounded in our deeply shared values,” he said. “We must continue to advance with science, while never losing sight of what guides us.”

Creating an Environment for Success

Dr. Lunin emphasizes that FCS provides a “tremendous practice environment,” equipping physicians with the latest clinical, scientific and professional resources to support their success and deliver world-class care.

Throughout his career, he says he benefited from mentors and colleagues who challenged his assumptions and broadened his perspective and approach to medicine. In turn, he developed a deep appreciation for collaboration. Recognizing that no physician can know everything in an increasingly complex and specialized field, he regularly sought the expertise of other physicians and encouraged patients to pursue second opinions whenever they could provide additional value.

“By bringing together the right expertise, asking the right questions and leaving no stone unturned, physicians can provide care that is evidence-based, compassionate and free of second-guessing,” he said.

He notes that this collaborative approach is reinforced at FCS by a robust network of specialized resources, including precision oncology capabilities and molecular support teams that help physicians translate genomic testing results into informed treatment decisions. Physicians also work closely with oncology pharmacy experts who provide guidance on therapeutics, dosing, administration and treatment monitoring, ensuring patients benefit from coordinated, personalized care at every step.

Just as important, he said, is a culture that encourages physicians to collaborate, innovate and continue growing throughout their careers. In addition to clinical excellence, physicians gain valuable leadership experience, business acumen and real-world insights through opportunities to engage in operational, strategic and scientific work that enhances and shapes the future of cancer care.

“A key part of our mission is to advance medicine and science, and our care is exceptional because of the structure we’ve built to ensure physicians can practice at the highest level,” said Dr. Lunin.

Helping Physicians Build a Career—and a Life—of Purpose

Keenly aware of the day-to-day demands physicians face, given his nearly three decades of providing care to patients with FCS in Sarasota, Dr. Lunin stresses the importance of a fulfilling life beyond the clinic.

When talking with potential candidates, Dr. Lunin hears a consistent theme: physicians want to provide outstanding care without sacrificing the lives they have built outside of medicine. Being an excellent physician is inseparable from being an engaged partner, parent and community member,” he says. “FCS is committed to providing the support and culture that allow our physicians to thrive both personally and professionally while delivering exceptional care.”

He says FCS will continue investing in tools and resources that help physicians spend less time on administrative tasks and more time focused on patient care, including AI-powered documentation and clinical decision-support technologies.

The goal is to create an environment where physicians can spend more time with patients, less time on administrative tasks and build rewarding, sustainable careers for the long term.

These days Dr. Lunin maintains a busy schedule outside the clinic—one that includes invitations from top medical colleges nationwide. He says it has been “fantastic” interacting with physician candidates who share a vision for a trajectory like his—to start and spend their careers with a practice where they can continue to grow and have immense purpose and impact.

“I want them to drive to work each day with two things—wisdom in their mind and love in their heart for the privilege of caring for our patients, our communities and one another.”
